My mother, I don’t know how pregnant she was with me, but I know that she did a 10-year reunion recital with the people she used to take dance class with. I always joke around that my dance lesson was in the womb. I know that she used to say that. My father used to play in a band, and she used to say that I’d just sit there and bounce. I got my voice from my father.

It was weird, I heard (Gary Wright song) Dreamweaver in my head when he walked in the room. (upset that he is not recognised for the popularity of trucker caps) It’s funny, I keep hearing Ashton Kutcher say how he was responsible for trucker caps. Me and my friend Trace Ayala were wearing them when we were seventeen.

(on inducting the Material Girl into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.): The world is full of Madonna wannabes. I might have even dated a couple. But there is truly only one Madonna.

Christina Aguilera had that same voice when she was ten… She is, in my opinion, the best singer of my generation.

(on his longevity) I could give you a bunch of analogies about why I’m still around that would sound like hippie self-help bullsh*t. I saw an opportunity and I took it. Sure there’s a lot of luck involved. But on some level I have to believe in my ability. And I’m not apologising to anyone. I worked fucking hard to get here.

I was always removed from the whole idol thing. I cared so much about what I did that stuff didn’t register. My parents instilled in me the mindset of always being humble, so I’d like to believe that all the teen idol stuff went in one ear and out of the other.

When I was 10 my stepfather bought me some shares in Wal-Mart. It was my first lesson in money. He taught me the right way to spend and save. I like nice things but when I’m in a store, I usually talk myself out of buying anything.

I had really awkward hair and terrible skin and I was really scrawny, I looked like a broccolini, not even a broccoli. I was long and skinny and my hair blossomed out on the top–I was a rally weird-looking kid.

Love is the basis of everything. First you have good chemistry, and then you fall in love.

(On his and partner Trace Ayala’s new clothing line) I love the way my grandfather looks–the way he stands up straight, with the respect that he’s owed… Our grandfathers wear their clothes with dignity. And he would give me the shirt off his back, so I thought, we should just make him one.
