Justin Timberlake and Matt Morris’ slow, heartfelt cover of Leonard Cohen’s classic “Hallelujah” was a definite highlight of Jan. 22’s Hope for Haiti Now telethon. It was also the first time millions of TV viewers met Morris, an old friend of Timberlake’s who recently put out his debut, When Everything Breaks Open, on the pop star’s Tennman Records. We got Morris on the phone to talk about the telethon, his album — and when we can expect new music from his pal Justin.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did your participation in the Hope for Haiti Now telethon come together?
MATT MORRIS: I was in Los Angeles, promoting When Everything Breaks Open, when everything was coming together for the telethon. Justin asked if I would like to sing with him. I said, “Of course, in a heartbeat.”
Had he already picked which song to sing?
No. We brainstormed. He suggested it as an idea. We chewed on that for a minute. I had shot a video of me singing “Help!”, a ballad version of the Beatles song, which I posted last year on my YouTube page. He called me a few days prior and said, “Maybe we should think about performing ‘Help!’” So we took both of those songs to the rehearsal space and played through them. “Hallelujah” just felt right. The arrangement came together quickly and naturally.
It’s a song that’s been memorably covered by many artists.
It is a much-covered song, indeed. It’s a great song for it. It has the classic melody. It cuts to the heart. There have been some epic covers, some simple covers. I’m honored to be on the list of people who got a chance to cover the song, you know?
When you were working out your arrangement, what did you want to bring to the song to differentiate from those other versions?
We didn’t get too heavy about it. It wasn’t much of an intellectual process. It was an emotional process for us, I think. I mean, I can’t speak for Justin directly, but I think for the both of us there was a desire to create something in that moment that was beautiful. That was really the intention behind it. If you listen to our music on our own albums, we both clearly have been influenced by Jeff Buckley. It wasn’t about any one other artist’s rendition that we were trying to hold ours up against by any stretch, but if there was one that would have an influence on me and Justin, it would have been that. I heard a really beautiful version of “Hallelujah” by Brandi Carlile that broke my heart. It’s one of those where I’m willing to give it a listen when people sing it. That’s how much I love that song.
Did you have any favorites among the other telethon performances?
I loved listening to “Halo,” Beyoncé. I like acoustic performances, I’m a fan of them, so it was nice to hear her and Chris Martin perform that song. Her voice is just amazing. I also thought Mary J. Blige’s performance was a classic gospel soul performance. It just made me want to stand up off the couch, you know? Everybody brought something really unique.
The telethon introduced you to a lot of new listeners. Why should someone who first heard you there buy your record?
I would be grateful if they would give it a listen. If they were moved by the performances, not even just mine, but the performances from the telethon — if they’re people who listen to music with their heart, not just their ears — then I think they might appreciate this album. If not, if they were at least introduced to my voice on “Hallelujah” and they purchased that song or the Hope for Haiti album, then it did what it was supposed to do.
How closely did Justin work with you on your album?
He was a part of the process the whole way through. Well before we even got into the studio, we had been writing together. I had been showing him songs, saying, “So, what do you think about this?” And he’d give me feedback, or he’d say, “I dunno, why don’t you try this direction,” and I would go in that direction. I trust his gut. I trust his musical instincts. Those have been a part of really every aspect of making this album. He was there recording with us in Austin. We were recording in Los Angeles and he was involved with the final mixes and mastering.
You two met as co-stars on The Mickey Mouse Club in the early ’90s, right?
That is true.
Did you and he stay in touch all through the years after that show?
There was maybe a year, a year and a half after the show had wrapped when we both went back to our respective lives and we didn’t talk quite as much. But it wasn’t long before we reconnected. I was in touch with him through the whole *NSYNC phenomenon, and what was a very explosive rise to superstardom for that band. And then his breaking out solo. We stayed in touch pretty much since we met.
A lot of Justin’s fans are wondering when he’s going to make another record of his own, since he’s been busy with running Tennman and other projects. Do you have any insight into that?
I wish I could tell them. You know, I myself am a Justin fan. I do like his records. I’ve had the good fortune of being a part of the last record–we co-wrote a song together ["(Another Song) All Over Again"] that ended up on the record. So I’m looking forward to a day when his focus shifts to that more. I think it would be great. I don’t have any insight into it. But you can tell people that I’m going to start writing songs in the hopes that that lights a fire. In the meantime, we’ll have to just have to continue to bump Justified and FutureSex/LoveSounds. And occasionally he’ll show up on someone’s record. Timbaland just put a record out, and it’s featuring Justin Timberlake. So it’s not that he’s not out there in the world. I have a feeling–and this is not based on any knowledge of anything in the works for him musically, but just on knowing who he is as an artist–I have a feeling that he has so many things creatively in store for people that they can’t even wrap their minds around yet. Whether it’s a movie or another album or whatever he really sets his mind to, it’s going to be good. We just have to be patient.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
Justin Timberlake brought sexy back, and proved in the process that boy band breakouts could be pop A-listers. He created a wardrobe malfunction, cried us a river, and he, uh, cut a hole in that box — and looked damn good doing it.
Also, Futuresex/Lovesounds came in at #9 on

He began the decade as ”just” a member of the hugely successful boy band *NSYNC and ends it as one of the most versatile and beloved entertainers in the world . ”I take my work very seriously,” says the singer-actor, 28. ”I just don’t take myself seriously at all.” Few A-listers would have had the comedy cojones to put their ”D— in a Box,” as Timberlake famously did while hosting Saturday Night Live — and surely none would have been as hilarious doing it. But his pop-star day job is no joke to him, as evidenced by his two solo albums, 2002’s Justified and 2006’s FutureSex/LoveSounds, the latter of which featured the groovesomely lubricious ”SexyBack.” —Clark Collis

Entertainment Weekly’s new issue ( hits shelves tomorrow ) features the top list of entertainers for the decade. Had this been People magazine, Justin wouldn’t have been mentioned… but EW loves him ( they also love woj too ) and have featured him not only on the list but even put his thumbnail on the cover!

“Wearing some of those outfits I wore when I was 17 or 18. Those were explosions of wrong.”
- Justin Timberlake, reminiscing about his ‘N Sync wardrobe, in PEOPLE’s 35th Birthday special issue
Justin’s lovelife sure made the headlines with week with rumors of his split with Jessica and a so-called fling with Rihanna . . . here’s what the tabloids cooked up. Scans from us weekly and star magazine , which both feature Justin on the cover.
Despite reports that Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s two-year relationship is over, sources tell PEOPLE the couple have not broken up.
In fact, on Monday night they were photographed together while on a getaway in Northern California.
“They’re together,” says an insider. “They’re not breaking up. Any time they spend time apart it’s because they’re working.”
Over the summer, Timberlake, 28, was in Europe promoting his Givenchy fragrance and William Rast clothing line, while Biel, 27, remained in Los Angeles where she starred in Guys and Dolls.
But in January, the actress plans to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro (as part of the star-studded Summit on the Summit expedition to raise awareness for clean water), and Timberlake, says sources, is in talks to join her.
A Rough Patch
Whether the couple will still be together in three months is another story. According to a second source, they are going through a rough-patch
“Things have been a bit up in the air recently,” says the source. “They’ve been spending more time apart – more time with each of their friends, and they’ve been reevaluating [their relationship].”
On Sept. 22, Biel was dateless at the L.A. wrap party for her upcoming film Valentine’s Day, and on Sept. 25, Timberlake partied at Crown Bar in West Hollywood with best friend Trace Ayala.
Adds the source, “Jessica has felt like they haven’t been on the same page – haven’t had the same priorities.”
As for rumors that Timberlake has been getting close to Rihanna, a source close to her insists that the relationship is purely professional: “They’re working together. They were in the studio for her album and they’ll be going back in again.”
wow…. one says that and the daily news prints this ….
After a rocky two-year run, the couple has reportedly called it quits, Us Weekly reports in its latest issue. And it was the “SexyBack” singer who is said to have ended things over the phone “about a month ago.”
While in New York in September to show his William Rast clothing line at Fashion Week, Timberlake was “clearly on the hunt,” snitches a friend.
The singer supposedly dirty-danced with a tall blond in a short black dress at a Manhattan club Sept. 9. The late-night incident is similar to another guys’ night out in June when JT was allegedly spotted making out with a woman at N.Y.C. hot spot Avenue.
Curious clubgoer Lindsay Lohan didn’t hold back when she witnessed the alleged incident and snapped a nearly blacked-out photo, asking, “So dark — where’s jb cheater?”
The troubled starlet eventually claimed her Twitter account had been “hacked,” however an Us source says she panicked after Timberlake “told all his people to ban Lindsay and make her life miserable.”
Timberlake’s attempt to fix his flawed relationship with his curvaceous girlfriend proved unsuccessful as the couple had been having problems long before cheating rumors began.
In July, the Daily News’ Gatecrasher column reported that Timberlake and Biel’s relationship was quickly headed for Splitsville.
“Things don’t look good for them right now — they’ve hit a really rocky spot,” confides a source close to JT, who added that serious problems began back in February during a boys’ trip to Las Vegas.
“Justin had to leave dinner once because Jessica was calling him incessantly. They got into a huge screaming match over the phone about how she’s always ‘checking up’ on him,” said the source. “She’s extremely needy and is always keeping tabs on him.”
The insider wasn’t the only one who thought the actress was a bother.
“All his friends think she’s really annoying,” added the source. “She’s always trying to be one of the guys. She and Justin have no chemistry.”
Now that Timberlake has finally cut the cord on the couple’s ill-fated romance, Us reports that Biel is in “severe denial and won’t accept” the split.
Another source added, “There’s no way of knowing if it’s a firm breakup, because with them it’s so hot and cold.”
of course…. they would pick THIS week to end my subscription. haha

I LLOOOOOVVVVEEEEE this picture. best face shot!!!!
Recently, Justin Timberlake was in New York City to film Saturday Night Live, but he found the time to grant a few moments to journalists in his capacity as the new face of Givenchy’s cologne, Play. The process of interviewing Timberlake has more twists and turns than a Sue Grafton novel (J Is for Justin?), so I was sworn to secrecy about his location which, it turned out, was on an empty floor of a Chelsea condo building. Upon entering the uninhabited penthouse I was asked to watch a documentary about the making of the film shoot for the scent’s ad campaign. After the doc, I was allowed into the antechamber, one room closer to the man himself, where I watched another documentary, this one about the actual fragrance. Lost in the discourse of the citrus-y high notes of Play, I was startled to feel a gentle tap on my shoulder. “It’s your turn,” said a clipboarded PR woman. I followed her through a partition and then, just like that, I had gained an audience with Mr. Timberlake. After exchanging pleasantries, we quickly got down to business.
Who are your fashion icons?
Mine are pretty obvious. Early Elvis — not the Elvis of onesies, but with the pomaded hair and big collar, the rockabilly stuff. Also, Sinatra. Johnny Cash. My stepfather was one of my style icons growing up. He was a banker, and I used to love to watch the routine he would go through. He would lay out his suit and the power tie he wanted to wear the night before. I used to watch him tie his own ties in the morning before going to school. When you go through the ritual of buttoning a collar, tying a tie, spraying on a scent, and picking out the right socks — you walk out a little more confident.
Has your style remained constant, or has it evolved?
I was an ’80s kid. The ’80s and ’90s were trend after trend after trend. In the ’90s, I had one pair of Girbaud jeans you couldn’t get off me. They still look like cool jeans, though. I think at the end of the day style comes from swagger more than anything. I don’t think you should walk out of the house saying, “I am going to try to pull this off.” You have to feel completely comfortable in it before you step out the door.
It has to be unforced.
Exactly. I think that’s the operative term for 2009.
You have very concentrated bouts of dancing onstage. How do you remain undrenched in sweat?
Actually, I’m a sweater. That’s the beauty of camera. HD has kind of done a number on that, but I always thought the sign of a good performer was that they were working really hard and didn’t look like it.
Of all the smells in the world, why put your face to Play?
I’m not a cologne freak. I don’t wear it all the time. I’m not wearing it right now. My issue with cologne is that it makes you smell unlike yourself. Sometimes to be funky, you gotta smell funky. I like Play because it doesn’t take away from how you smell. It just accents it to make you smell a little better.
So, if your top notes are fruity, they’ll stay fruity. Are your top notes fruity?
The top notes are more grapefruit.
And the bottom?
The undertones are bergamot. Like I said, I like citrus. I like a fresh, clean, out-of-the-shower smell.
