Justin TIMBERLAKE
He grew up in a small town in the South of the United States and today, at thirties, hard hide that he is the real gentleman, which has developed from a multiple Grammy winner into successful looking face on the big screens, but praises him not only the audience but also critics. What I like to watch? Action, like we can see in his latest achievement, science-fiction adventure In time (on our screens on 3rd November). And what can wish someone who was inspiring the crowd with the popular boyband N Sync? The more hours spent at the beach.
What attracted you to join the project In time?
I was a huge fan of Gattaca and The Truman Show. Andrew Niccol called me and talked about the movie. Hearing about the project from his point of view and seeing the world that he would created was what really inspired me to join the project. We talked about the idea that we are all searching for the fountain of youth, so to speak. What would happen if, through science, we could actually achieve looking young and living forever? What Andrew so brilliantly created with that was the juxtaposition with the risk of overpopulation. For the lack of a better term, the establishment kind of dehumanizes us by regulating our lives and making time the currency. When you turn 25, you have a year of life left on the clock on your left forearm, so you are made aware of how much time you have left to live.
Is this a bigger and more important role than you are used to?
I look at this movie as my first real leading role. With this one, you wake up with my character and I will be one of the last faces you will see. It was not only physically demanding, but also just mentally, a new stone to turn for me. But, it was very exciting.
Andrew Niccol`s movies have always had an uncanny ability to sense the zeitgeist of the time – what does In time say about now?
I think Andrew has an uncanny sense and ability to use a medium like the films he writes and directs to make us look in the mirror a little bit. He does it in such a smart, thoughtful way. What I love about this film is we are using an antihero who, in turn, is forced to become a hero, and we live through him in this world. The bigger part of the picture is that everything I have described is the cause of the world w are in, society has been split into two halves. There is no middle-class. There are the very rich, who can live forever, and the very poor, who die everyday. I do think it is in the zeitgeist and something where we can look at.
So there`s a lot of action to look forward to? Do you like action movies?
I grew up loving Rambo, Lethal Weapon and The Fugitive. They were action movies that were performance-based and felt very real. When it comes from the character and the situation they are in, I felt that I was with them a lot more because I wanted to see how they were going to handle each situation. I don`t necessarily need to feel that I`m watching a big budget movie. I want to relate to its characters. And, to me, the good ones really do that.
What does the action genre give you to explore?
It offers a different physicality to a performance. I`m from Tennessee and it`s no secret we like to shoot guns. I was excited about doing movie In time because I could play exactly the type of action character I like to play…very thoughtful and while there are thrilling elements to his story. Also the physicality of it was really amazing, it is fun to drive great cars at high speed and shoot guns, and not get arrested for it!
Do you have characteristic from Tennessee?
My mother always said that it is rude to talk about money. Therefore, I always feel strange when I have to talk about earnings.
You have a recognizable face, it is difficult to remain anonymous?
I do not know, I have never analyzed my face (laugh). I know where you want to aim with your question. It is easier if you do not go to some event, or if you are not exactly in the middle of filming. Many more problems I had with recognition in my twenties, when I wondered whether it is worth … Then I realized that fame can not make sense, you simply leave it.
If your fame ended tomorrow, would you feel relief? Or unbearable loss?
I think i would be ok. I am not waking up with thought that I am famous. I love my work.
Was the movie The Social Network, in which you played the controversial Sean Parker, the inventor of Napster and co-owner of Facebook, the movie that put you “on the map”? We know that is extremely difficult to success in other culture …
I agree with that The Social Network was seminal movie for me. Sometimes I laugh with my friends about that because I should write on my card the name: David Fincher has pushed me to the movie. It was crazy feeling when I was nominated for various awards, because I felt on the casting doubt from those who hired me. The fact is that I have repeatedly come to the audition, but I realized that we can create a subtle role. My film idols were always guys who can do anything, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and when these guys are your role models, you would hardly come to terms with the fact that this you are not capable alone..
Will be acting career your only career path?
When I went into movies, I did not want anything to prove. Movie offers came at the right time, it was the different types of applications and the opportunities I did not want to miss. Friends with Benefits, for example, my first movie where I play “normal” man. In The Social Network I am playing a sociopath, in Bad Teacher, I am just … freak.
If we get back to the auditions. You have started a musical career with them, right?
It is true. If my parents would not have led to me all those auditions, I would have somehow found myself in order to get there. I remember my mom telling me she would take me to every audition and that she will support me, but it will cease as soon as she noticed that I was not interested in the thing. When I joined the group N Sync, I worked very hard. I was the youngest in the band, but because I grew up in a sporting spirit, I was constantly aware of the importance of exercise. So that the preparation is very important as the performance itself. For our performances were characterized by fast farewell -goodbye with fans, the band still playing, the light is extinguished. With the stage we went straight to the bus and on the road to the next place because we wanted to avoid traffic congestion. The entire concert was filmed by camera from the right angle, on the bus I watched the video and I took notes. Then I went to the team and other members of the band and talked about what was not good. I was a committed and serious, maybe even too much.
Was this work for you a big help?
I was never quite satisfied, always seemed to me that we should be better. We were all in this, but to varying degrees. The whole time we were compared with other groups, the competition has been strong. We thought that we should be better than others. Therefore, we have worked so hard. On tour we had a great time. But this way of life is extremely isolated, strange and sometimes sad. These are the only three words to describe a situation when you leave the arena with 80,000 people and you go to the bus, in which you are alone. You left a place where the decibels are so loud that you could hardly see them, and find yourself in total silence. Manic experience.
How did you get used to it?
You should know that it all depends on commitment. It is not important only song that fans sing with you, even if you were writing, it is also important how they are seeing you.
How, after all these years in the limelight you know who can you trust?
I have really been on the scene long enough, right? Initially, there are always misunderstandings, because I can not control the ideas that people have about me. I used to desperately tries to make people “disarming” because I do not like it if they were nervous because of me or upset. Such a behavior I have also misinterpreted, especially if the camera were there. I thought that this way or is not true. People with whom you restore bond immediately, it is always enough, but this has nothing to do with who you are, in fact, just about your work. When you clarify to yourself, is all easier. My job is just one part of my personality, not my essence. I am also a son, friend, nephew, grandson …
Who are your best friends?
I am still in touch with friends from school days. I just sent an sms to my best friend who lives in Montana. Nostalgia connects people more. I grew up in a small town, all my friends I could have counted on the fingers of one hand. When I will no longer be able to be on the stage, you will find me somewhere in the countryside.
What about wealth? Do you agree with the statement, that wealth can break down?
It is a question of education. I have been fortunate that my stepfather was a banker and he knows very well with the money. When I was a teenager and started to appear on the big stages, my mother said, and I remember it as if it was yesterday: “I want you to know that it could not be more proud than I am. You are phenomenal, you know how to inspire people. But that does not mean that you are better than them. You still have to wear pants in the same manner as they, again each morning, each leg separately.” Her words hit me in the heart and I think they are very much real.
How do you prefer to spend earned cash?
I would say that I am rather modest. I buy clothes once a year and I have enough for all year. What Prince said? “With money you can not buy happiness, but it helps you to pay the way to it.” It is nice to have my apartment in Los Angeles and New York, in both cities I spend so much time, so it is fine to have my home in both cities. But these are things that I do not urgently need.
Are you happy?
Yeah, I feel happy. To be honest about my knowledge, then I can tell you that I have a lot of people said to me tha I will not succeed. Many people had doubts about me, so I feel they still have, although now I have a different opinion about it. Nothing more but I do not find necessarily prove them how very wrong they are.
What are you most looking forward to this moment?
A beach. I am telling to myself all the time. If I had learned anything, I had this, that you have to now and then take time for yourself … and enjoy life. When I was twenty I was through what I was doing, saying what I did. Not any more. It is not over for me what I can give from myself. I confirm through the things that have nothing to do with expectations. True success is… the process.
