The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five
By Garth Franklin
Friends with Benefits
Opens: July 22nd 2011
Cast: Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Patricia Clarkson, Jenna Elfman, Bryan Greenberg
Director: Will Gluck
Summary: A young female headhunter in New York convinces a potential recruit to accept a job in the Big Apple. Despite an attraction to each other, both realize they’re everything they’ve been running from in a relationship and decide to see what happens if they leave emotion out of it and keep it strictly physical.
Analysis: The second of two films opening next year with a similar premise, the other being Ivan Reitman’s “No Strings Attached” with Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman, this one boasts a better behind the scenes pedigree and a stronger supporting cast including Woody Harrelson, Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins, Emma Stone, Jenna Elfman, Andy Samberg and cameos by Jason Segel and Rashida Jones.
Though his first film “Fired Up” wasn’t a success, filmmaker Will Gluck became a name to look out for with this year’s smart high school comedy “Easy A”. Here he directs and is performing a polish on the script by Keith Merryman and David Newman. The choice of Justin Timberlake and “Black Swan” scene stealer Mila Kunis in the lead roles is a bold one, neither are proven box-office draws but both are strong talents with excellent comedic timing and a good chemistry together judging by the trailers.
Whereas ‘Strings’ plays to rom-com conventions, ‘Friends’ is much more a self-aware deconstruction of the genre. Gluck calls it a modern-set classic Hepburn and Tracy production where the characters have romantics histories, are well versed on the rom-com conventions they see in movies, and frequently comment on them and parallels with their own lives.
There’s also no shyness about the title, Timberlake saying “I don’t want to walk into a movie called ‘Friends with Benefits’ and see the PG-13 version. For me, you can’t have a movie like that without embracing what the title is.” Screen Gems is opting for a key late July release which should help make this a welcome alternative for adults to the big fantasy blockbusters dominating at the time.

Ten Most Wanted Films of 2011
411′s Mike Gorman counts down his top 10 most anticipated films of 2011! Check out the full article to see which films made the list and why!
9. I’m Mortal/Now
In the future there is no sickness or aging, so in order to prevent the planet’s resources from being devoured, our time will be limited and how long you get to go will be based on what you can pay. That is the premise of the film in the number nine spot. While it pays homage to other sci-fi films that have come before, ie. Logan’s Run, there is something truly unique here that could really become an epic tale. Now before you get all huffy about the film’s lead being Justin Timberlake, I think we have to agree that his dramatic skills have grown of late and he may just be ready to carry this blockbuster.

ROGUE’S Top 5 Best Trailers of 2010
If we are going to recognize the best films of the year, it is only right to also recognize the best trailers of the year. Abundant amounts of money and time are put into these short film summaries, making them works of art in their own right. So here are our picks for the best trailers released in 2010:
3. Friends With Benefits
Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake can do nothing wrong. Both coming off phenomenal films (Black Swan and The Social Network, respectively), this pairing is extremely appealing. The trailer is absolutely hilarious, especially since Timberlake’s rendition of Semisonic’s “Closing Time” plays over most of the action.

Justin Timberlake: 30 Sexiest Stars of 2010

#8 JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE (The Social Network)
Genuine versatility is sexy, and with his performance in The Social Network, J.T. proved he’s an actor. And not just a singer who can promote a film by rapping a history of hip-hop with Jimmy Fallon (which, truth be told, was pretty awesome). —MB

50 Best Movies of 2010

Much has been debated about the quality of the top movies released this year, but that we were able to pull together a list of the 50 best movies of 2010 means it couldn’t have been so bad after all.
After the jump, we count down our favorite movies of the year, from the mind-bending ‘Inception’ to the movie that may have defined our generation, ‘The Social Network.’
From Aaron Sorkin’s masterfully crafted script to Jesse Eisenberg’s stellar and spot-on performance as Mark Zuckerberg, ‘The Social Network’ easily became so much more than “that Facebook movie.” Director David Fincher creates a tight universe of young people careening toward something that will change the world and co-star Andrew Garfield gives a moving performance as the betrayed Eduardo Saverin. The film is crisp and modern and beautifully brought to light the story behind Facebook, the invention that defined a generation. — GD

#5 The Vega Choir’s chilling cover of Radiohead’s classic says it all, not just about Facebook’s mastermind Mark Zuckerberg but also the compulsive, over-sharing world he created. What you don’t hear is the clickety-clack of everyone you know updating their status to link to it.

Best Movie Trailers of 2010
By Bryan Enk
Movie trailers have become a medium unto themselves. Sometimes we’re more excited for the trailer to a movie than the actual movie itself (and, indeed, sometimes the trailer ends up being better than the movie). There’s a true artistry to the movie trailer, a tightrope act that can come crashing down if it isn’t exactly right — a really good trailer’s got to entice and enthrall you to the point where you want more, but it pulls the plug at the last second.
Here are the ten best movie trailers 2010, the ones that got us really excited for the movie — and for the trailer itself!
1. ‘The Social Network’
David Fincher is doing a Facebook movie? Yeah, and it ended up pretty damn great. And the trailer made the tale of boy wonder Mark Zuckerberg look bleak, bizarre and crazy emotional, making us realize that we were in for quite an impressive piece of cinema and not just … well, “a Facebook movie.” Arguably the most quoted trailer of the year (“Thousand … twenty-two thousand!”), it packed an extra emotional punch thanks to the clever use of Radiohead’s ‘Creep,’ as performed by Sweden’s Vega Choir.

Originality isn’t easy.
Invention invites risk and skepticism. Maybe that’s why so few dare to be first, and why it feels good to applaud those who are.

Justin Timberlake: AskMen’s Top 49 Most Influential Men of 2010
AskMen today announced the results of their annual reader survey: the Top 49 Most Influential Men of 2010. More than half a million votes were cast. Now in its fifth year, the Top 49 Most Influential Men challenges AskMen’s 16 million monthly readers to determine which male figures have made the biggest impact, and ultimately, shaped what it means to be a modern man in 2010.
The 2010 list seems to favor “rule breakers” who are engaging, unconventional, and speak frankly. It even includes Steven Slater, the JetBlue employee turned folk hero who cursed out unruly passengers and bolted down an emergency chute after cracking open an adult beverage.
#33 Justin Timberlake
Why he’s No. 33
Remember when Justin Timberlake used to be a pop star? Good, because neither do we. The former ‘N Syncer and subsequent prince of pop hasn’t released a full-length album since his instant-classic FutureSex/LoveSounds topped the charts in 2006. Instead, Timberlake has chosen to try his hand at pretty much everything else. His men’s fashion line, William Rast, is a mainstay at New York Fashion Week, and his duties as host of Saturday Night Live earned him an Emmy. Despite his proven comedic skills (men everywhere are still trying to insert their penises into boxes), Timberlake has had trouble breaking through as a serious dramatic actor. His turns in Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan showed slivers of potential, but his decision to star in Mike Myers’ cataclysmic The Love Guru made us question whether the once-invincible Timberlake had lost his edge.
After many stop-and-starts, it looks like Timberlake’s transition from musician to serious actor may be complete. His stunning turn as sleazy Napster founder Sean Parker in this year’s most talked-about film, The Social Network, has earned him a ton of Oscar buzz, as well as lead roles in a string of upcoming high-profile films. The only way Timberlake’s year could have been better is if he got to go home everyday to someone like, say, Jessica Biel. Oh, wait.
