Justin Timberlake loves golf so much he carries a club around with him when he is at home.

The singer is known to be a fan of the sport, and even created his own golf course near his hometown of Memphis. There have been rumours he has a special room in his house where he goes to practice his putt, but Justin has laughed off the claim.

“I have way too many expensive pieces of furniture in my house to do that. That’s a little ridiculous,” he laughed. “But, yeah, I mean I do wake up in the morning and I walk by my clubs and well, look at me now. I’m sitting here with a wedge in my hand right now. And I’ll walk around my house with a wedge. I have hardwood floors and I’m tapping it on the floor as I walk around the house.”

Justin’s love of golf comes from his father, Randall. He was adamant his son should practice the sport from a young age, but Justin was less keen. It wasn’t until he became a teenager that he grew to enjoy games.

“My dad tried to get me into it when I was about ten years old, but I never really picked up the game. And then, about six or seven years ago, I took up the game and immediately became addicted,” he explained to callawaygolf.com. “More or less because I was on tour and I wanted to get outside. It was a great way to get outside. Then I started really hitting the ball. From there it became, ‘OK, how do I switch those interviews around so I can go hit balls?’”

The Scotland-based Golf Environment Organization announced last month that the first golf course it is certifying in the Americas, and just the ninth worldwide, is pop star Justin Timberlake’s 18 holes south of Millington.

To put the significance of the certification into perspective, among the courses registered and trying to become certified is the Old Course at St. Andrews in Great Britain, often regarded as the world’s best.

Augusta National has the incomparable Masters tournament, Pebble Beach has the stunning coastline, and Mirimichi has an emerging claim as the nation’s most nature-friendly golf operation.

But on Friday, as many as 75 full- and part-time workers were busy repairing damage done last weekend by Big Creek, which flooded half the course, the practice area and the shorter executive course.

Play is not affected because the course is closed anyway for the first half of the year for renovations.

Another silver lining appeared as the water receded this week.

“We were pleasantly surprised,” general manager Rich Peterson said. “We had a new layer of topsoil on the fairways and tee boxes. And that silt is just doing a world of good for the grass and all the other plants out there.”

Flooding may be natural, but it’s not the kind of irrigation practice promoted by the Golf Environment Organization.

Its certification means Mirimichi meets the nonprofit’s standards for the way it uses less water, protects water quality, sprays less pesticide, creates more natural habitats, plants native vegetation, uses less energy and leads other courses toward environmentalism.

“Environmental sustainability is about more than what we do at our course,” Timberlake said in a prepared statement. “It is about taking a leadership role and encouraging other golf courses, and organizations of all kinds around the country and around the globe to emulate our commitment toward making a positive impact on the world we live in.”

Mirimichi was already the nation’s first course be certified as an Audubon International Classic Sanctuary.

The other certified Golf Environment Organization courses comprise two in The Netherlands, two in Sweden and one each in Italy, United Kingdom, Denmark and Switzerland.

Mirimichi had been scheduled to reopen July 24, but the flood-recovery work may push the date back a week or two, Peterson said.

TIMBERLAKE is set to open his new golf course in his native Memphis, Tennessee in July (10) – and he reveals the place has very special memories for him.

The pop superstar and golf fanatic is the brains behind the revamped Mirimichi Lakes country club, which was the first place he learned to hit a ball.

He says, “This was the course where my dad taught me to hit a golf ball. I was really young, so all I really cared about was girls at the time.

“We actually have done some pretty cool things with this course; we had to re-do the whole course. We’re the first course in America to be certified an eco-friendly golf course.”

“Future of PGA at Hilton Head could hinge on finding sponsor replacement.”

OK, I made up that last one. Al Czervik was Rodney Dangerfield’s character in “Caddyshack.” He does not have a golf tournament. But if he did, chances are it would be in jeopardy, too, if it relied on title sponsor dollars to pay the bills.

Title sponsors on the PGA Tour are dropping like Phil Mickelson’s birdie putts. At last count there were nine tournaments, about a fourth of the schedule, that do not have deals in place for 2011. Thirteen additional title sponsorships will expire after 2012. Some likely will be back. Many likely will not.

Each time a sponsor bails out, the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open gets a wee bit closer to attaining the spring date it might need to survive in the long run. Right now, it’s probably in the pine needles, laying four.

The JTSHFCO is the most recent incarnation of pro golf in Las Vegas. It is part of the PGA’s Fall Series, which means it is played during football season and the baseball playoffs by guys not named Tiger or Phil.

Tiger and Phil play most of their golf during spring and early summer, leading up to the PGA playoffs for the FedEx Cup in August and September. After that, they step aside to count their money and turn the links over to guys with names such as Martin Laird, Marc Turnesa, George McNeill, Troy Matteson, Wes Short Jr., and Andre Stolz, who I believe played Cher’s son Rocky Dennis in that “Mask” movie.

Actually, those are the last six Las Vegas winners. I am sure they all are excellent golfers. I am just as sure they will never be identified only by their first names, like Tiger and Phil and Jack and Arnie and Sergio, though it’s been a little while since we heard from Sergio.

The lack of marquee talent might explain why our PGA tournament has gone through directors like Spinal Tap went through drummers. Adam Sperling, the new guy, is back for a second year. That makes him something of a graybeard, although he doesn’t look old enough to shave.

Sperling said the JTSHFCO already has notified the Tour, in writing, that it wants to move to spring. It could happen as early as next year, Sperling said, or the year after that although 2013, after all these current title sponsorships expire, is the most likely scenario.

Until then, the best way Las Vegas can show the Tour it would support a spring tournament is by supporting the one still played here in the fall. Last year was a good start, said Sperling, estimating that attendance was up 30 percent over 2008.

That sounds great, but what does it mean in actual numbers? My question was like Phil on the back nine at Augusta. Sperling saw it coming.

He estimated the 2009 tournament attracted between 15,000 and 20,000 spectators over its five-day run. The goal this year is to double attendance, to 40,000. That might seem like a lot, but not when you consider Hilton Head drew around 130,000 a couple of weeks ago, and said that was down 20 percent from prior to the recession.

“Last year we did everything we could do,” Sperling said about boosting attendance, “but we didn’t know everything we could do.”

This year, they are going for the green. Or at least spreading some of it around. The JTSHFCO is offering $15 vouchers — the cheapest ticket on Tour, Sperling says — to local businesses and organizations, who get to keep 50 percent from every voucher sold. An even better deal is available to schools, which get to keep 100 percent.

The Clark County School District is the nation’s fifth largest, with 311,417 students at last count. If each student sold only one voucher it would mean a school system that is broke would be $4,671,255 less broke.

It also would challenge the security force at TPC Summerlin like never before.

That’s one problem Adam Sperling wouldn’t mind having.

To achieve GEO Certification, Mirimichi had to publicly represent and have independently verified a high level of performance in a wide variety of environmental and conservation areas.  Some of the particular strengths noted during the site’s verification included: enhancing nature protection by increasing the size and connection of natural habitats; placing an emphasis on entirely native planting, enhancing landscape and cultural heritage; minimizing water consumption; protecting and enhancing water quality; minimizing pesticide use; reducing resource and energy consumption and waste; providing comprehensive internal and external environmental communications and maintaining a challenging Environmental Management Plan.  Progress is continually re-assessed and reported on a three-year basis.

The 10,200-square-foot building, perched over the driving range, may sound like heaven to students of the swing.

A screened-in patio shelters three hitting bays, so golfers inside hit out onto the range.

The facility will offer three high-tech systems for golf instruction and club-fitting: The Callaway Performance Analysis System, which captures swing speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin rates and other factors for finding the best club fit; Trackman Technology, which displays ball trajectory in real time; and V1 Golf Teaching System, which helps instructors diagnose swing flaws and offer lessons online.

The center should open when Mirimichi reopens in July.

The pop singer and his parents bought the former Big Creek Golf Course at 6195 Woodstock Cuba Road, reconstructed the course and reopened it last July. But they have closed it for the first half of this year for yet more renovations.

“The advanced technology and state-of-the-art building will make Mirimichi the one-stop shopping headquarters for the perfect set of clubs, custom-fitted to individual specifications,” golf director Greg King said in a prepared statement.

Justin Timberlake, with six Grammy awards and two Emmys, seems like any other golf-crazed everyman who might round out your foursome on a Sunday morning.

Get him talking, in fact, and it appears a sense of relief washes over JT when speaking about the game. In these conversations, there is no deflecting gossip from the tabloids nor any need to plug his latest vehicle. Truth is, his passion for golf is so frenzied, you get the feeling he would trade life as a pop superstar for one as a touring pro — if only he could keep his handicap low enough.

In advance of the PGA Tour’s upcoming Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, the tournament host sat down on the ESPN.com Hot Seat to discuss his recent hole-in-one, trading those Grammys for success on the course and the benefits of running his own event.

Q: Most guys who like golf will play a few rounds each week, maybe catch the telecasts on TV. You put your name on a PGA Tour event. That’s dedication.
A: Well, it’s way more selfish than you think. Really, it’s just an opportunity for me to hang out on the range and watch pros hit balls, you know? Out of all of the things that I get to do, this is probably one of the cooler things. And to top it off, we’re raising money for an amazing cause. At the end of the day, there are a million ways to raise money, but if you can actually have fun and play golf at the same time, it’s like, why wouldn’t you do that?

Q: Complete this sentence: If Justin Timberlake the entertainer brought sexy back, then Justin Timberlake the tournament host is bringing back ________.
A: Hmm, let’s see … eventually, Tiger.

Q: You just trumped my next question. When’s that going to happen?
A: I don’t know, man. I’m sure the guy is pretty busy. Didn’t he win there as an amateur?

Q: It was actually his first professional win back in 1996.
A: That’s right — first pro win.

Q: As a tournament host, are you more Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis or Bob Hope?
A: Well, I would say I’m probably a little bit of all three. Wasn’t Bing recognized as one of the best celebrity golfers as far as skill level? Wasn’t he really good? So my answer to the question is I’d probably try to be like Bing Crosby, but I’d probably wind up being slightly more like Bob Hope as far as skill level is concerned [laughs].

Q: Speaking of skill level, any thoughts about trying to play in your own tournament? Just a wild guess, but I bet you could pull a sponsor’s exemption.
A: You know what? You’re giving me an idea.

Q: You’re listed as a 6-handicap. How’s the game right now?
A: I’m playing to about that. Right now my index is a 5.2 or something. I haven’t looked at it recently, but the last score I posted was last week, and it was pretty true to that handicap.

Q: That’s pretty solid.
A: Man, you know what it’s like. Do you play?

Q: Of course.
A: Then you know what it’s like. I’m comfortable with that handicap. That handicap for me travels well. It gives me a couple of shots and forces me to play good golf all the time. For somebody like me, I don’t get to work on my game as much. I don’t have a lot of time to just go to the range and hit balls. The times that I get on the golf course, it’s like, ‘Well, I’ve got a day off, I should go play.’ That’s the most fun is actually getting to go play. But if I had time, I could become a range rat, easily. I could sit out there for hours and just chip and putt and work on everything.

“I love this game. I learned it playing on a course in Memphis, Tenn., called Big Creek. It was the first place my dad taught me how to hit a ball. A couple years ago, my dad told me that the course was going to close and become a development. He said, ‘What if we buy it?’ I started laughing, but he wasn’t. He was serious. I said, ‘If you’re serious, so am I. Let’s do it.’

“The course was a landmark in the community; we had to save it. I’ve put my heart and soul into the project. We renamed it Mirimichi. We wanted to refurbish it. I asked some questions, and we found out we could make it a ‘green’ course – the first course in the U.S. to be designated as a certified Audubon International Classic Sanctuary. It was important to try to reuse water, to zero out our ecological footprint.

“Before we opened this summer, we had three missions: Create an amazing sanctuary for the community, create an eco-friendly course, and create a public course [that would be] mentioned in the same sentence as Torrey Pines and Bethpage Black. This is one of the coolest things I’ve ever been a part of. It’s an awesome feeling to give this course back to the community.”

Justin Timberlake has been a hit as a pop music, TV and movie star, but he’s apparently not ready for City Hall.
Asked by a reporter today if he’d be willing to end Memphis’ political turmoil by running for mayor, Timberlake sputtered and smiled and put forth a different candidate. “I’d be the first to appoint my dad,” he said, referring to stepfather Paul Harless. “His record is way cleaner than mine.”
 Timberlake may not have political ambitions, but the 28-year-old former Millington resident and “SexyBack” singer was happy to be described as “an ambassador and a champion for the city of Memphis” as he introduced his new eco-friendly, state-of-the-art Mirimichi golf course to the media this morning. The par-72 course at 6195 Woodstock Cuba Rd. in Millington opens for public play Saturday.
“Mirimichi” reportedly is a Native American term for “place of happy retreat,” and today’s lovefest of a hometown press conference – which took place just north of the 18th green, on a handsome wooden deck where an outdoor bar and fireplace will be built – must have had a “Mirimichi” vibe for Timberlake. He’s used to dealing with invasive paparazzi and entertainment journalists more interested in his “(Expletive) in a Box” than his holes-in-one.
“I think this is probably the coolest thing I’ve ever been a part of in my life,” Timberlake said of Mirimichi.
Timberlake invested some $16 million in the course, which was the first in the country to be certified as a “classic sanctuary” by Audubon International, in recognition of the course’s “environmentally sustainable” design, which is intended to make it as friendly for wildlife and native plants as for golfers.
Only about 85 of the facility’s 200 acres are “mowable” turf; the rest has been given over to “native grasses,” according to Rich Peterson, Mirmichi general manager.
Said Timberlake: “I was able to pose the question, is it possible for a golf course to actually be ‘green’?”
Asked if Timberlake had done much “hands-on” work at Mirimichi, Randy Wilson – designer of the course, with Mike MacElhose – said: “The deal was, if he taught us how to dance, we would teach him how to run a bulldozer.”
Originally “beanfield farmland,” according to Mirimichi director of golf Greg King, the area has a lot of history for the Timberlake family. Paul and Lynn Harless (Timberlake’s mother) held their wedding reception at the Woodstock Hills Country Club that once occupied the site. Timberlake added: “Right there on the 10th tee is where I hit my first golf ball ever, when it was Big Creek.”
Paul Harless – a partner in the course with his wife and Timberlake – said Mirmichi is more than just another golf course. Thanks to Timberlake’s involvement and its eco-friendly design, it is expected to attract “national tourists” to Memphis, he said, and to “promote and contribute to the economic growth of Memphis.”
In recognition of this desire, Mayor Willie Herenton issued a proclamation declaring July 24 “Paul Harless Day” in Memphis. Special assistant Pete Aviotti, who attended today’s event to represent Herenton, said the declaration was historic because it would be Herenton’s last such proclamation.
Timberlake – dressed in conservative golf attire, including black slacks and a white shirt with black trim – said it wasn’t hard to decide to build a course in Millington rather than, say, Los Angeles.
“I could care less about celebrity,” he said. “This is where I grew up, and this is home … and it always will be for me. Any time you can give back to that and get 18 holes in, it’s a win-win.”
Said Lynn Harless: “We are so proud of Mirimichi and what we’ve created here. I was just equating it to birthing a new baby.”
Added Timberlake: “I’d like to say that I know nothing about birthing babies. That should cover the press for about two weeks, all over the world.”
