Audio Update: Justin Timberlake On Music, Comedy, And Wearing Out His NPR T-Shirt
Click here to listen to the interview

By Linda Holmes
It was almost two years ago now that Justin Timberlake, while filming The Social Network, cemented his place in the NPR collective heart by being photographed wearing our logo across his chest like a tattoo, only fabric, and temporary, and less painful. (Back then, by the way, that shirt wasn’t in our shop. Now, you can have one! It’s with our “best-sellers,” even now.)
On Saturday’s Weekends On All Things Considered, host Guy Raz talks to Timberlake about that shirt — as well as music, comedy, and his new film, In Time, in which he plays a man battling a dark future where time is traded as currency. According to Timberlake, the idea that the rich could literally buy life from the poor is particularly topical given the Occupy Wall Street movement and its concern with “separating class by wealth.” But for the most part, he says he took the role because he admired the character — and all the cool stunts and beautiful women weren’t a hardship, either.
Timberlake’s movie career has been a little spotty, more so than his music career, but his prospects in acting took a giant leap forward when he played Sean Parker in 2010′s The Social Network. The film was so important for him that Timberlake says he often tells friends his business card should say “[director] David Fincher Put Me In A Movie.”
But music and serious acting aren’t Justin Timberlake’s only calling cards — they may, in fact, be secondary in his pop-culture ascendancy to his comedy work (much of which incorporates singing), including highly regarded hosting gigs on Saturday Night Live, hosting the ESPYs for ESPN, and appearances on Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night that have, when posted online, turned into massive viral hits.
Being involved in comedy seems to come naturally, and he believes it does a lot to help people connect with you. “Comedy, in general, is the most disarming,” he says. “It kind of breaks this wall down that I feel like people have because they have some perception of who you might be.”
Speaking of perceptions: About that shirt. “I’m a big fan of many different programs on NPR,” says Mr. Justin Timberlake,”so it wasn’t because I thought it was hip. I actually am a really big fan.” Despite the fact that this comment could be taken to mean he thinks NPR isn’t hip, he follows by making the point that he’s loved the shirt to the point of damage: “I have to get a new one. It’s gotten some wear and tear. I actually wear it a lot.”
And there you have it. Better to be utilitarian than to be hip.

Justin Timberlake Thinks ‘It Would Be A Blast’ To Host The Oscars [AUDIO]
Singer and actor Justin Timberlake called in to “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” on Thursday to discuss his new movie “In Time,” new musicians he’s working with, and what he thinks of Eddie Murphy hosting the Oscars.
Justin has hosted Saturday Night Live, the ESPY Awards, and the MTV Movie Awards. One gig he has not hosted, is the Oscars. Justin says, “That immediately makes me nervous. I mean it would be a blast.” Eddie Murphy will be hosting The 84th annual Academy Awards. “I’m excited to see Eddie host the Oscars. I think he is going to be amazing. I instinctively feel like he’s going to incorporate his brand of humor into the evening, which is just impeccable.”
Justin’s new movie “In Time” opens this Friday and explains it saying, “if you could imagine that we’ve found a way to stop aging, the way we look when we are 25 is how we are going to look forever. What type of obstacles does that bring? over population is the first thing. So, the government has kind of come up with this way to disenfranchise us in a way and time has become money. When you turn 25, you have a year of time on your body clock, which you are able to see your left forearm,” he explains
Justin recalls a scene from the movie with co-star Amanda Seyfried, “I remember we were shooting a scene and I said, ‘You know what would be cool is if in the scene your character just kind of took her heels off and ran barefoot.’ She literally looked at me with this contorted face and said, ‘But I’m a girl and we like our shoes.’ And I said, ‘You know what, fair enough. I can’t say women wouldn’t relate to that.’ So, she says, ‘I’m not going to leave these expensive heels!’”
We haven’t heard any new music from Justin in a while, but he recently teamed up with mega producer Timbaland and FreeSol and sang the hook “Fascinated.” Since Justin has his own music label Tennman Records, he is always on the lookout for new artists. He says, “I’m always kind of ear to the tracks.” He has currently been working with an amazing musician, Brenda Radney. He says, “She’s an amazing musician, singer and songwriter. We’ve been working together a little bit.”
Tomorrow Justin will be answering questions from fans on Twitter 4:30-5:00 Pacific Time. 7:30-8:00 Eastern Time. “In Time” hits theaters Friday, October 28th.

Justin Timberlake Is Really Proud of ‘In Time’ Experience

Starting with last year’s charismatic work in The Social Network, Justin Timberlake has more than proven he can act. He’s already starred in two comedies this year (Bad Teacher and Friends with Benefits) as well as worked on an animated feature (Yogi Bear), but with In Time the entertainer is finally front and center. The sci-fi adventure features a solid supporting cast (Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy, Matt Bomer) and is directed by one of Hollywood’s more cerebral filmmakers, Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, Lord of War).
Will In Time finally prove that Timberlake has arrived as a leading man and not just a solid supporting actor? Regardless of the outcome, he says that he is “really proud” of his In Time experience. Click on the media bar and listen to Timberlake:
In Time opens October 28th.

Justin Timberlake Teams with Timbaland & FreeSol for Hot New Track ‘Fascinated’ [AUDIO]
For music fans, it’s been a long five years since multihyphenate superstar Justin Timberlake released an album, but while he’s been pursuing other passions including acting, business, and philanthropy, Timberlake hasn’t completely turned his back to his first love — music.
Timberlake has been incredibly strategic in filling his roster at his small label Tennman Records, and to push his rock star recruits FreeSol, he called up his longtime producer Timbaland to cook up a killer track. The result is “Fascinated”, a high-energy mesh of Timbaland’s signature heavy bass, FreeSol’s electric guitar and Timberlake himself singing the hook.

Audio: Justin Timberlake reveals very little about myspace plans
Justin Timberlake is one of the most talented people currently working in the entertainment business. Aside from being a top singer, song writer, and producer in music, he has also grown into a very well respected actor. Timberlake, who will next be starring in Friends with Benefits (opening in theatres July 22nd) will now be taking his talents in yet another direction. A few weeks ago, it was announced that Timberlake is part of a group that recently bought the social media web site MySpace. We spoke to Timberlake and asked him what his plans are for the site. While he wouldn’t actually reveal any details to us, his cryptic response leads us to believe that something big is in the works! Take a listen, and judge for yourself. Justin Timberlake: FWB is a comedy about our generation
The Los Angeles set comedy Friends with Benefits centers on two buddies (Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis) who decide that sex without love is a rather safe bet. Unfortunately, the whole “friends with benefits” theory has its share of complications, especially when feelings enter the equation.
“We sat around and verbalized the scenes for two months,” said Kunis, who was last seen in Black Swan. “So we would just do dialogue upon dialogue of what we thought was funny.”
