‘Awkward’ Star Nikki DeLoach on Living at Justin Timberlake’s House, Bad Perms, & Lacey’s Season 2 Journey

Talk about an amazing big break. Actress Nikki DeLoach got her start dancing and singing on The Mickey Mouse Club next to Justin Timberlake & Ryan Gosling, and since then the effervescent Georgia native has gone on to appear in films and TV shows like Love and Other Drugs, Ringer, and North Shore.

These days you can catch DeLoach on MTV’s Awkward playing Lacey Hamilton, the hilariously clueless, yet well-meaning, mom to Ashley Rickard’s Jenna. We recently chatted with DeLoach about what’s coming up for Lacey this season, her Mouseketeer past, and her own totally awkward teenage phase (spoiler: it involved “fro hair”).

Your first big break was on The Mickey Mouse Club. Do you still talk to any of your fellow Mouseketeers?
Yeah, actually I do! Justin [Timberlake] I talk to probably more than anyone. We’ve stayed good friends throughout the years and I’m really close with his family. But I’ve also run into Ryan [Gosling] a couple of times…and I talk to via Twitter a lot of the old Mouseketeers. And via Facebook we all keep in touch with each other. Like Dale [Godboldo] and Tony [Lucca] and Jennifer [McGill]. So yeah, Facebook and Twitter have been really fun to be able to reconnect with everyone and keep up with what’s going on in everyone’s lives. It was a really great group of kids.

You were a member of a girl group and you lived in Justin Timberlake’s house. Any good dish on teenage JT? Did he leave his dirty socks lying around the house?
[laughs] He’s actually very clean! He took care of his clothes very well. You know, he takes pride in the way that he looks.

Yeah, he’s a very dapper gentleman.
He is a very dapper gentlemen! He’s terrific. I just so proud of his success. You know, he’s one of those guys who everybody looks at him and is like ‘Oh man, he’s got it made. Look at his life, it’s so great.’ But that life did not come without him working his butt off for it. He’s been one of the hardest working people that I’ve known for a really long time. So I’m really proud of all his success. It’s well-deserved because he really put a lot of work into it.

Do you still sing? Think we’ll ever get to hear Lacey sing on Awkward?
I would love to see Lacey sing on Awkward. I would love for Awkward to do a musical episode in general! We’re all such geeks when it comes to theater and musicals, so we’re always walking around the set singing. So I know that all of us would really enjoy that.
