August 30, 2003 - Anonymous writes "In the You Tell Us section of the MTV.com, an Orlando, Florida native named Samantha weighed in on Justin Timberlake's behavior at the MTV Video Music Awards. She writes, "It did not escape my notice that Justin Timberlake failed to thank *NSYNC in any of his three acceptance speeches while Beyoncé was nothing but gracious toward Destiny's Child. It also did not escape my notice that he made a not-so-subtle dis toward his group's music when he said winning was 'cooler than bubblegum'. *NSYNC made him what he is and gave him a chance to go solo. What an ungrateful ass.""

August 30, 2003 - Chart Attack weighed in on the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, saying *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake out-classed his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears and her lip-locking partner for the night, Madonna. They said, of the kiss: "This was PR manipulation at its shrewdest — Brit gets to seal her new 'I’m not a virgin anymore' image and Madonna, who’s desperation for a hit has only been highlighted by her Gap ad, becomes current again. In contrast to Brit and Madge’s stunts, Spears’ ex-manfriend (and the biggest winner of the night) Timberlake, was a pinnacle of restraint. Dressed in a smart suit and refraining from either putting anyone down or talking about booty, Justin may not have actually deserved to beat out Johnny Cash in a couple of categories — but at least he admitted it, calling for the audience to deliver the Man In Black a round of applause." August 25, 2003 - dazeme11531 writes "Well, I must say.... that the Justified and Stripped Concert was definitely worth the money! I just got back from the August 23 show in Albany, NY and it was the best time I have ever had! To start off, tonight was the last night the Black Eyed Peas would be with Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, so for 'Where is the Love', Justin came out to sing the chorus of the song along with all his dancers and Christina's dancers as well. Christina's show was awesome! She really knows how to put on a good show! My favorite part was when she sang 'Lady Marmalade'. Her voice is amazing live! Justin's half of the show was by far my favorite! The *NSYNC star sang ALL of my favorite songs off of 'Justified' and the 10 minutes he beat boxed was crazy! (He did wave and smile at me!) Justin is definitely a great performer and so is Christina. I must say that after tonight, I am an even bigger fan of both of them!"

August 25, 2003 - News of the World spoke with Playboy bunny Zoe Gregory-Paul about stories of celebrities visiting the Playboy mansion, including *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake and his new girlfriend Cameron Diaz. She claims that when Timberlake "asked me to clear the orgy grotto so he and his mates could have some action, I said, ‘Who do you think you are?' There were five pals of Hef's down there, all having full sex with some of the Playmates. This was at Hef's 77th birthday party back in April and his friends were all having a great time in the grotto—and what he didn't realize was that everyone is special at Hugh's parties. You don't get get red carpet treatment just because you're Justin Timberlake. So Justin just kept on watching. I heard he stayed down there for most of the night." Despite being rebuffed, Timberlake got quite an eyeful. She says, "He was clearly enjoying what he was seeing. What was going on there was hot." August 25, 2003 - Lisa Rose of The Newark Star-Ledger was on hand at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford on Wednesday where the Justified and Stripped tour rolled in. Rose said of the performance by Christina Aguilera: "Rival teen diva Britney Spears has done this shtick before, and better. Because Spears relies heavily on pre-recorded vocals in concert, she is able to fully devote herself to the visual element. Aguilera actually sings, limiting her ability to create elaborate tableaus. There's no arguing Aguilera's vocal talent, but her material is so rife with mediocrity that one longs for the distraction of a Spears-esque bungee jump or FX downpour." As for *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake's performance, she says, "Even if he was overpowered by his band at times, Timberlake is an engaging performer with a handful of killer tunes. He proved that he's got the chops to outlive teen pop. The jury is still out on Aguilera." Read more.

August 23, 2003 - Sasha Frere-Jones of Slate online is wondering why are some writers so afraid of Justin Timberlake or other pop stars. She says in regards to those who criticize the *NSYNC star for not being as involved in the songwriting process: "Do we know exactly what Thom Yorke contributes to Radiohead songs, other than singing? Do we know what Jeff Tweedy does, exactly, in Wilco? When Pink Floyd takes a year to make a record, is that 'spontaneous'? Wasn't Bob Fosse hyperchoreographed? It feels a bit tortured to avoid the most obvious explanation for Madonna and Justin's records: that Madonna's and Justin have a lot to do with their music, and how they make it up and get it done is no more important than it is for any other artists with their names on the marquee." But compared with his performance last Wednesday at an after-midnight Irving Plaza showcase, the Coliseum concert was a hollow, plastic symphony in schmaltz, replete with gadgets, gizmos and stage shenanigans." As for Aguilera, he says, "Despite her annoying fake laugh, her wandering stage patter - and a wardrobe even Cher would reject - the diminutive singer was herself at this performance. She didn't try to be the blond pop genie in a bottle. Instead, she educated her fans with a couple of ballads made famous by Etta James." Read more.

He says of the *NSYNC star's set, "Timberlake oozed confidence and emphasized music, rather than his image. Backed by an ace band, Timberlake showcased material that put his *NSYNC work to shame. August 18, 2003 - Carly Carioli of the Boston Phoenix profiled *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake and his 'Justified and Stripped' tourmate Christina Aguilera. "Justin Timberlake’s 'Cry Me a River' is an innovative pop song, but it probably would not have captured the popular imagination quite so well without an accompanying video framed expressly as a revenge against his famous ex-girlfriend," Carioli explained. "The story lines of the 'Justified and Stripped' tour that he and Christina Aguilera brought to the FleetCenter last week were established well in advance: two ex-Mouseketeers united in an uneasy alliance against a third; and, more important, the evolution of teen pop into something with a longer shelf life. Of course, each performer had his or her own agenda. During the pre-tour media blitz, Aguilera accentuated the aggressive flirtatiousness that she consistently mistakes for a display of self-confidence on her latest album, 'Stripped'. Timberlake could scarcely contain his disdain — he looked like a boy who’d been saddled with his little sister’s annoying friend for a prom date." Read more.

August 5, 2003 - Jeannette Walls of MSNBC.com spoke with a concertgoer at the historic Rolling Stones SARS show in Toronto, where *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake was booed at had to dodge water bottles being hurled at him. "The crowd probably reacted this way because the majority of the artists in the lineup were older and more classic rock & roll, with most people in the crowd coming to see the Stones, AC/DC, Rush and the Guess Who," the concert-goer explained. "This was not a boy-band friendly crowd, to say the least. Besides, for most Canadian men, listening to a man with a voice like a 14-year-old girl isn’t cool on most days, and it certainly wasn’t popular on this one... I’m glad he didn’t get hit, ‘cause that would be very un-Canadian, but I sure did enjoy the look of surprise on his face."

August 4, 2003 - The teen pop genre helped to make *NSYNC star Justin Timberlake a superstar, but now that the genre appears to be fading, what does Timberlake think of the "death of teen pop" talk? "As long as there are teens and as long as we have culture with popular music in it, teen pop will never die," Timberlake told Next magazine. "It just takes on a different form. Years ago it was Nirvana and then it turned into Britney and now it's 50 Cent. So, teen pop is whatever the kids in the suburbs are listening to. I don't really have a formula. I just go in the studio and do what I enjoy doing. And I think that as you grow as a person, you grow as a musician and as a songwriter. That's how I've gone beyond just the teen thing."
