NEW ORLEANS – The entertainment leading up to the Super Bowl is so A-list, Beyonce may not even have the most anticipated performance surrounding the big game.
Justin Timberlake is due to give his first major musical performance in four years. Stevie Wonder is performing for the masses at an outdoor concert. CeeLo Green is reuniting with his old hip-hop clique, Goodie Mob, and Rascal Flatts is teaming up with Journey for a concert. Those represent only a fraction of the all-star events to celebrate the Super Bowl.
“The Super Bowl has become such a big event in itself. So many people come from everywhere, looking to not only be a part of the Super Bowl but also the festivities leading up to the game,” said CeeLo, who is performing at ESPN’s Next event. “There’s so much to do, from parties, concerts and events.”
Indeed, until the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers meet at the Superdome on Sunday, much of the emphasis in the days leading up to the event has very little to do with the game.
Lil Wayne is throwing a major bash in his hometown, Jay-Z is holding court at another event the evening before his wife, Beyonce, performs at halftime, and Jamie Foxx is due to give a private concert — and that’s just the lineup for Saturday.
Director Michael Bay is holding court at a private estate for a celebrity dinner for charity. Santigold, Solange and producer/DJ Diplo will perform at Audi’s two parties during the weekend, and both Playboy and Maxim are planning blowout parties with their trademark models.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Gary Solomon Jr., co-founder of Solomon Group, the local company hired to help set up the stages and lighting for the outdoor concerts and broadcasting areas in the French Quarter and near the Superdome.
“When you look at the master calendar of all the events, it’s pretty daunting,” he said. “This Super Bowl is like having 30 events in the same weekend.”
Perhaps the most hotly anticipated event features Timberlake. He will perform during “DIRECTV Super Saturday Night,” an invitation-only concert that will also feature Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of The Roots as DJ. Questlove is a friend of Timberlake’s who served as DJ at the pop star’s wedding to Jessica Biel in October.
Questlove said he’s honoured that he was asked to DJ Timberlake’s return to the stage on Super Bowl weekend. Timberlake is expected to perform his new single, “Suit & Tie,” which features Jay-Z, and other tracks from his upcoming album, “The 20/20 Experience.”
“The album is incredible,” Questlove said. “I’m a huge supporter, and I’m there to make sure the audience has a good time.”
Jay-Z and Beyonce have been spotted in New Orleans, and many are wondering whether Jay-Z — who is hosting a party elsewhere that night — will be taking the stage with Timberlake.
“Mum’s the word,” Questlove said. “All that is under wraps.”
Stevie Wonder is also performing Saturday night. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend, whose classic hit “Superstition” will be featured in two of this year’s Bud Light Super Bowl commercials, is headlining an outdoor concert. Rising guitarist Gary Clark Jr. is also scheduled to perform.
Besides the Timberlake concert, Questlove is performing with The Roots at three Super Bowl parties, including the 49ers after-game party — “or funeral, depending on the outcome of the game,” he said with a laugh.
OneRepublic and Matchbox Twenty will perform as part of the Super Bowl pregame show.
Much of the entertainment kicks off Friday. VH1 is hosting a concert headlined by rock band Train while Grammy-winning R&B singer Fantasia leads a pack of Christian and gospel singers for the NFL’s Super Bowl Gospel Celebration. Baltimore Ravens star Ray Lewis is being honoured with a “Lifetime of Inspiration” award during the event, which will be hosted by Sherri Shepherd of ABC’s “The View” and Grammy-winning gospel musician Kirk Franklin.
The gospel celebration will also include a performance by the NFL Players Choir of dozens of current and former professional football players and a performance by Lecrae, the Christian rapper NFL players have named this year’s “Player’s Choice” artist.
“It’s a definite honour, really to even be considered but on top of that to be requested by the players. It’s really humbling,” said Lecrae.
Miami rapper Pitbull has two scheduled appearances this weekend: Friday night he’s performing at an invitation-only party by Rolling Stone with rapper Flo Rida and Nick Cannon. On Saturday, he performs for the general public during DIRECTV’s “Celebrity Beach Bowl,” a star-studded flag football match that will include Snoop Dogg, Neil Patrick Harris, Chace Crawford, Josh Hutcherson and former NFL players Deion Sanders and Warren Moon.
Also Saturday, CMT is hosting a “Crossroads” concert with headliners Journey and Rascal Flatts.
Though many of the star-studded concerts will have limited access or are by invitation only, dozens of local artists will be performing throughout the weekend on stages set up along the Mississippi River and in the NFL Experience at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. Many downtown streets are being closed to traffic to allow more pedestrian access in the main entertainment areas — the French Quarter, riverfront and near the Superdome.
“It’s great that it’s back here. There’s a rich tradition here in New Orleans of just having a great time,” CeeLo said. “The atmosphere in New Orleans is always upbeat.”
It has now been confirmed Justin will perform at the 2013 Grammy awards on February 10th.
Oscar Isaac stars as Llewyn Davis, a singer navigating New York during the 1960′s folk music scene. The film is based loosely on the memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street by Dave Van Ronk, though the character is apparently not based on Van Rank.
Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed the film, which is eyeing a premiere at Cannes. Watch the Inside Llewyn Davis trailer for a preview.
TOM FORD has collaborated with Justin Timberlake on the “refined style” seen on his new album artwork and in his latest music video. The singer’s upcoming album, The 20/20 Experience, is due out later this year.
“I adore Justin,” said Ford. “He has innate style and enormous talent. It has been such a pleasure and honour to work with him throughout this entire creative process.”
The pair have worked closely together on a series of bespoke tailoring – including eveningwear, shoes and accessories – that “will be a focal point of The 20/20 Experience”. The cover of Timberlake’s new single, Suit & Tie, features the artist wearing a Tom Ford tuxedo, shirt and satin bowtie – a signature Tom Ford Menswear look. Further pieces from the collaboration, including a three-piece suit, leather loafers and black onyx cufflinks, can also be seen in the track’s official lyric video.

Ne-Yo wants to set up a collaboration with Justin Timberlake, somone he’s always admired, and is keen to work with Tulisa in the studio after she supports him in the UK.
Ne-Yo wants to collaborate with Justin Timberlake.
The 30-year-old musician admires ‘Suit & Tie’ hitmaker Justin, who recently made a long-awaited return to music after a six year break, and would ”jump at the chance” to work with him.
Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz, he said: ”I would definitely like to work with Justin, I’ve been a fan for a long time.
”I feel like he looks at music the same way I do. It’s super important to him. The reason he was out for so long was because he wasn’t going to come back until he knew that everything was going to be done the way he wanted it done.
”I’m hoping to get that phone call, I would jump at the chance to work with him.”
The ‘Let Me Love You’ hitmaker and songwriter, who is currently working with Beyonce on her fifth studio album, is keen to explore more collaborations in the future.
Also on his list is ‘The X Factor’ judge Tulisa, who will support him on his latest UK arena tour in March, and while he hasn’t had a proper conversation with the star, Ne-Yo feels there’s an opportunity to work together past the live run.
He revealed: ”I’m looking forward to having Tulisa on the tour … It will be good to have a chat and see if there’s anything we could collaborate on together at some point.
”I’m always looking for a person that’s gonna get on stage and come out with something real and that’s what I get from her. She’s just gonna get out there and give a quality performance.”
Ne-Yo is set to kick off his latest UK arena tour, supported by Tulisa, at Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena on March 6.
Look at that photo. Is Jennifer Lawrence not the luckiest girl in the world? Who cares that she won a Best Actress award, she got to stand between Justin Timberlake and Bradley Cooper! We’re so jealous we could explode!
But the “Suit & Tie” singer and Silver Linings Playbook star weren’t the only hunks who cleaned up extra nicely for the event: Glee’s Darren Criss looked sleek and sexy, Les Misérables’ Eddie Redmayne put a twist on the classic tux and Ben Affleck was Ben Affleck. Which means really, really handsome.

Tip tells MTV News he did ‘two or three records’ with JT and Timbaland, including one tentatively titled ‘Goodbye Homey.’
Now that our long wait for new music from Justin Timberlake is officially over and his new “Suit & Tie” single is breaking records, it’s only a matter of time before we get our hands and ears on his brand-new full-length album, The 20/20 Experience.
So who else will be involved in Timberlake’s passion project? Well, “Suit & Tie” producer Timbaland will likely contribute to more songs (or potentially all of them, for that matter), and T.I. told MTV News that he worked on a handful of songs with Justin and Tim.
“Yeah, I spoke to JT. Me, him and Tim was on the phone,” T.I. told MTV News while promoting his new movie “Identity Thief,” starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy. “I did a record for them at the end of last year. They were working on a record together, and I had the pleasure of assisting them on their particular record,” he said, before revealing the tentative title of one of the songs. “I think it’s called ‘Goodbye Homey,’ one of them is, and then there is another one; I did maybe two or three records with them.”
T.I. and Timberlake first collaborated on “My Love,” from 2006′s FutureSex/LoveSounds. Tip is just as excited as fans are about the new direction of Justin’s music, as evidenced by “Suit & Tie.” “It’s just great that he’s back into doing music. The record he has out with Jay right now is phenomenal,” he said of “Suit & Tie.” “It was definitely a sound that was missed.”
The rapper/actor didn’t go into too many specifics of his tracks with Timberlake and Timbaland but did explain the idea behind “Goodbye Homey.”
“Well, ‘Goodbye Homey’ is really, it’s saying goodbye to something that is very special to you,” he said. “Not necessarily a person; it could be a time of your life, it could be an experience, it could be a relationship, it could be a friend that’s passed on. ‘Goodbye Homey,’ it has so many meanings and definitions. So when you hear it, you absorb it, and then whatever it means to you is what we intended.”
Now we’ll just have to wait and see if “Goodbye Homey” or any other T.I. collabos end up on The 20/20 Experience. The album doesn’t have a release date just yet, but Timberlake promised it would drop this year — and the fact that he just booked a Super Bowl weekend gig could mean we’ll see it sooner than later.
