American RnB superstar Justin Timberlake will rock for a cause when he guests on Grammy-winning record producer, singer and rapper Timbaland’s Shock Value Tour II concert on March 27.

Lives will definitely change when Timberlake, Timberland and Jojo perform at the SM Mall of Asia concert ground because the proceeds of the concert will be donated to the PLDT Smart Foundation Inc. (PSF).

The PSF is the social outreach arm of the country’s oldest and largest telecommunications conglomerate, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co., and its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications Inc.

“I know Justin [Timberlake] will donate a portion of it so I’m confident that we’ll get something although it may not be a huge amount,” said PSF President Butch Meily during a roundtable with editors and reporters of The Manila Times on Monday.

The concert will benefit the music department of a public school in Angono, Rizal, and about 100 orphans who lost their families when Typhoon Ondoy ravaged the country’s Metro Manila region, causing the worst flooding in more than four decades.

“There are also suggestions to include the children of heroes who died saving other families. We think that should count as well,” Meily said.

The PSF has worked in partnership with nongovernment organizations, schools and other groups in a number of diverse causes—education, microfinance, sports, juvenile rehabilitation, disaster response, the environment, poverty alleviation and the arts.

It has supported Cinemabuhay, an effort to discover future filmmakers and give them the opportunity to display their talents. The foundation recently awarded a P1-million grant to Slow Fade, a digital movie directed by Rommel Sales starring Diether Ocampo and Lara Quigaman.

The PSF is focusing on one or two priority projects every year. In 2009, it bankrolled the construction of a four-story school at the heart of Smokey Mountain in Tondo, and Bahay Pagasa, a P15-million juvenile rehabilitation facility in Dasmarinas, Cavite.

Meily was also named the executive director of the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF), which was formed to aid the government in the rehabilitation of damaged areas after typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng battered the country last year.

The PDRF said that Dutch expert Tjitte Nauta, who has conducted a study on the Laguna Lake, will hold a workshop on Thursday on how to solve the country’s flooding problem.

Before the end of the month, it is expected to come up with its assessment report of the damage caused by the disastrous typhoons, which will determine the cost of rehabilitation.

“We’ll have to fix the damage before the rain comes again,” Meily said.

The PDRF has received overwhelming support for the rehabilitation project from all walks of life. Meily said the foundation even received a check donation worth P6,549 from students of The Learning Tree school in Metro Manila.

“This [check] was given to us by 10 to 11-year-old students. The outpouring of support for this project was overwhelming,” he added.
